Warplanes dropped warning leaflets on Friday over Jilib District in Middle Juba Region, with the warnings directed specifically at local residents.

The leaflets contained messages urging the people of Jilib not to mix with Al-Shabaab militants and to stay away from locations where armed groups are concentrated or present.

The aircraft, whose country of origin was not identified, informed residents that terrorist groups and their locations inside the city are being targeted.

Civilians were asked, for their own safety, to distance themselves from all sites used or occupied by Al-Shabaab in the town.

This comes just hours after international partner warplanes carried out airstrikes in Jamaame District in Lower Juba Region and some surrounding areas.

On Thursday, the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) said its forces, in cooperation with international partners, conducted an airstrike on a house in Bu’aale, the capital of Middle Juba, where senior Al-Shabaab leaders were holding a meeting.

The leaflets dropped over Jilib are seen as a sign that further aerial attacks against Al-Shabaab are expected to take place in the town.

Jilib and other towns in Middle Juba have been fully controlled by Al-Shabaab for the past 18 years, and it is notable that Middle Juba is the only region in Somalia entirely under the group’s control.

Jilib holds significant strategic importance for Al-Shabaab, as it serves as the command center from which they direct their operations across the country.
