HNN: Former U.S. President Donald Trump has requested a historic military budget totaling $1.5 trillion, submitting it to Congress.

This defense spending request is the largest in decades and comes alongside cuts to domestic programs.

Trump requested nearly a 40% increase in military spending compared to the previous year, bringing the total budget to $1.5 trillion.

Although the budget request is not legally binding, it reflects the priorities of the White House, particularly a focus on the military and law enforcement.

The Director of the Office of Management and Budget, Russell Vought, stated that the 2027 budget will continue reducing non-defense spending and restructuring the federal government.

According to the document, the spending increase strengthens the U.S. military’s capability to achieve “peace through strength.”

This budget is expected to be debated for weeks in Congress.

The $1.5 trillion request includes an increase of $455 billion compared to the 2026 fiscal year. This is separate from an earlier emergency request of $200 billion that the Trump administration had asked Congress for, to support the war involving the United States and Israel against Iran, which began on February 28.

That earlier request sparked controversy among Trump’s “MAGA” supporters, who argued that allocating large sums to war contradicts the “America First” policy.

The budget plan also includes $73 billion in cuts to domestic programs, including:

  • Climate change initiatives
  • Renewable energy
  • Equity programs in housing, education, and healthcare
  • Refugee assistance

The funds will instead be directed toward:

  • The “Golden Dome” missile defense system
  • Critical minerals
  • U.S. shipbuilding
  • Military pay increases

Trump has also expressed a desire to expand the military and shift some healthcare programs like Medicaid and Medicare to the states.

Critics warn this could lead to unequal funding and reduced services.

Trump said:
“We are in wars. We cannot afford everything like childcare and healthcare programs… states can handle it, the federal government cannot.”

U.S. military spending has steadily increased in recent years, rising from $320 billion in 2000 to $997 billion in 2024, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute.

The United States also typically spends more on its military than the next nine countries combined, according to the Peter G. Peterson Foundation.

Strengthening immigration enforcement

The budget request also supports Trump’s other plans, including stricter immigration enforcement.

It proposes continued funding for the Department of Homeland Security and its agencies, such as:

  • Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)
  • Customs and Border Protection (CBP)

to support large-scale deportation campaigns.

However, Congress remains divided on funding these agencies, with Democrats calling for changes before offering support.

The budget also proposes:

  • A 13% increase for the Department of Justice
  • A $10 billion fund to beautify Washington, DC

Finally, the plan relies on Republican support in Congress for approval, with some parts potentially passing through a simple majority process.

The United States faces an annual budget deficit of nearly $2 trillion, while the national debt has reached approximately $39 trillion.
